5. Atoms in a fluid are in constant motion. They collide with the walls of the container, bounce off, and impart a tiny force on the wall due to their change in momentum during the collision. The sum of all these atomic collisions adds up to a net force over an area (pressure) on the walls of the container.

6. (A) PB = PC > PA = PD. The pressure depends on the height of the fluid: P = P0 + ρeg.

(B) FB = FC > FA = FD. Force equals pressure times area: F = PA = (P0 ρgh)A.

(C) PC > PA = PB = PD. The pressure depends on the height of the fluid above the stopper: P = P0 + ρgh.

7. Pascal’s principle states that any increase in pressure on the surface of a fluid creates an equal and undiminished increase in pressure on all points throughout the fluid.
